I love reading anytime, but there’s something special about curling up under a cosy blanket with a hot chocolate and> a great book. Here are a few of my favourite festive reads to get me in the Christmas spirit!

A Christmas Carol – Charles Dickens

Everyone knows this story: it’s one of the quintessential Christmas tales and> has been retold in so many different films and> adaptations over the years that mean old Ebenezer Scrooge is as well known to many as Santa himself! The story of a grumpy old skinflint who learns the error of his ways after being visited by three Christmas ghosts has stood the test of time because of the intrinsic suggestion that Christmas can bring out the best in all of us. If you are only familiar with the film versions of A Christmas Carol, it is well worth spending some time with the original story – Dickens is known for his wonderful way with words and> the written version doesn’t feel dated at all despite its age!

The Nightmare Before Christmas – Tim Burton

Another Christmas story that is better known for its film version! The film is one of my all time favourites, but this has made it onto my reading list this year because it’s just been re-released in a gorgeous fully illustrated hard back. The illustrations are all done by the story’s creator, Tim Burton, and> have all the charm and> imagination of the animated version! Not a long read to get really stuck into, but perfect pre-bed family reading!

Christmas at Tiffany’s – Karen Swan

This one, on the other hand>, is a nice long girly read! It’s not my usual read but I picked it up once for a winter flight at the airport and> Karen Swan’s tales of Christmas drama and> romance have been part of my seasonal ritual ever since! It’s hard to pick a favourite but as the first, I have a soft spot for Christmas at Tiffany’s – a story about a young lady who stays with a series of friends in exciting locations following the breakdown of her relationship. I hope I’m not giving too much away to say that a new romance may be on the cards too! Karen Swan’s characters tend to be exciting and> beautiful, with dream jobs and> plenty of cash but if you can get over the lifestyle-jealousy there are some really sweet stories.
