Did you know chocolate is actually good for you! Sadly I’m not talking about the lovely bars like Dairy Milk or Galaxy but studies do show that good quality dark chocolate could be deemed a superfood! The bean like seed “cacao” is the purest form of chocolate you can eat. It is what cocoa and> chocolate is made from. Cacao is full of health benefits but the problem is that on its own it tastes bitter and> chalky , so we add milk, sugar & butter to make it taste better! Turning something healthy unhealthy!
Cacao is a nutrient dense food, containing high levels of fiber, iron and> magnesium. It is packed full of antioxidants, even more than blueberries or available berries! Antioxidants help the body fight free radicals formed by everyday activities such as breathing. Free radicals can cause damage to the body so we need antioxidants to resist this damage. Studies have also shown that dark chocolate can actually help to prevent heart disease, another great benefit. Living in England> this may not be a massive benefit but dark chocolate may actually help protect your skin against sun damage. The flavanols can improve blood flow to the skin protecting it against sun damaged.
So we know about all the benefits of dark chocolate but you need to be careful! I am not suggesting you go out and> eat lots of chocolate every day. But if like me you get a craving for a little bit of chocolate or something sweet after dinner then dark chocolate may be the way to go. You need to be looking at good quality organic dark chocolate – anything above 70% cocoa is great! The higher the better – I love Green & Blacks 85%! You also need to limit portion size. Dark chocolate still contains large amounts of sugar and> it is quite a calorie high snack, so just go for couple of squares as a snack!
Happy chocolate eating!
