One of the products I tried and> decided to purchase at Be:Fit London was Teapigs Matcha powder. I’ve heard lots about Matcha but to be honest I wasn’t really sure what it was and> how it could benefit me. So at Be: Fit I decided to give it a go. I spoke to the lovely people at the Teapigs stand>, who let me taste the product and> they filled me on the benefits. It sounded good so I got myself a small pot and> decided to add it into my day.

What is Matcha?
Well in basic terms it is a green tea but is very concentrated, and> ground to a fine powder. Until recently Matcha has only been consumed in Japan but of course we love a “Superfood” in the UK so it is growing in popularity over here. It is springing up in health food shops and> cafes across the country and> I even saw a photo of Matcha glazed donuts recently! Although I don’t think it makes them healthy – I wish! Matcha is supposedly full of vitamins and> minerals, due to the way it is grown (under shade), and> as it is a powder you consume the whole leaf and> so are getting all the goodness and> throwing nothing away!

What are the benefits of Matcha
Matcha has similar health benefits to traditionally green tea but these are more prevalent in Matcha. Traditionally drunk by Buddhist monks and> later by Japenese students cramming for exams – Matcha is said to increase alertness and> improve concentration. This is due to the naturally occurring amino acid L-Theanine, and> of course caffeine. Although there is less caffeine in Matcha than coffee! Matcha also contains flavonoids which studies have shown to have an antioxidant effect. Teapigs Matcha was voted Best Slimming and> Fitness product by Your Healthy Living Magazine in 2014. Drinking matcha once a day can help to naturally increase your metabolism, and> can also be used pre-workout increasing fat oxidation. Basically meaning you will burn fat faster. In January 2015 Teapigs ran a Matcha Challenge, challenging you to drink Matcha once a day for 2 weeks, and> feel the benefits. The results show that people felt more energised, had better skin and> that they saw improvements in their health routine and> diet. A high percentage said they would buy the product again (99%) and> that they would recommend it to a friend (98%) – so it must be doing something eh!

So with that in mind, I am going to take my own Matcha Challenge and> drink my Matcha everyday for 2 weeks and> see how I feel. I have taken my first “shot” today – 1/2 teaspoon of matcha mixed into a small amount of water in a shot glass and> knock it back. I have to admit it doesn’t taste great, a little bit like pond water but I will experiment with different ways to drink it over the next couple of weeks, and> update you soon!
